THE SENATOR FROM KANSAS

Today's USA Today sings the praises of Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.). Sen. Brownback is a good man and I like him a great deal. But his position on immigration (he's with McCain) will be deadly in the eyes of conservatives, and he is not even close to being in the same universe as Gov. Romney in terms of public speaking or salesmanship. (I saw him speak in Memphis and he had his head down basically the entire time.) Sorry, Senator, but after eight years of George W. Bush, we need a more effective ambassador than that in the White House. Stay in the Senate and keep making us proud.

The article also has two interesting things to say about Sen. Allen. First, it paints him as more of a long-shot than Gov. Romney, which I think is actually pretty accurate--near as I can tell, most of the people who support him live inside the Beltway, which is good for buzz in the media but terrible for assembling the ground troops you need to win a primary. Second, it claims he's more solid than Gov. Romney on the life issue. But as I've already pointed out, Allen has been consistently less than good on abortion.
