THE "OTHER COLUMBIA"
I'm in Columbia, South Carolina tonight, after a very long drive from Columbia, Tennessee. (No, I'm not stalking Presidential aspirants, I'm signing books for the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women.) Everytime I come here, I'm amazed by the big names that come a-courtin'. Today, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback was here, tomorrow it's Rudy. When I was checking into my hotel, some people milling around asked why I was in town. (I was wearing a Ronald Reagan hat, so I guess I looked, well, Republican.) When I told them I was only a writer, they looked a little disappointed. Nevertheless, it's very obvious that this small city is the epicenter of the political universe...at least right now. Honestly, it's kind of exciting to be here!
