We've argued that the "Mormon issue" hasn't gotten an amazing amount of press lately not because it's been defused, but rather because the MSM prefers to beat Governor Romney up for supposedly being a "flip-flopper." Why? Because if they make conservative evangelicals think Governor Romney isn't a conservative, they won't even consider voting for a Mormon--making the religious issue a moot point.

You can see this in today's Associated Press piece announcing social-conservative stalwart Paul Weyrich's endorsement of Governor Romney. It includes this:

Romney, who is seeking to become the first Mormon president, also won the backing of Dr. John Willke, a founder and past president of the National Right to Life Committee...

There you have what I'll call the MSM Two-Step: momentum among conservatives leads to "Hey, didja know he's a Mormon?" I suspect we'll be seeing a lot more of it in the weeks to come.

But for now, who cares. Did I mention that Paul Weyrich endorsed Governor Romney today?
