"MORMON SPEECH" REDUX

Nancy, I don't want to speak for Steve -- but I'll speak for Steve. He was deeply skeptical of the idea of supporting Governor Romney, and it was on religious grounds. One of the things I threw at him was this post, and it worked.

As for this speech thing, I have endorsed the idea of a "Mormon speech," but I don't think there is really much (if any) daylight betweeen my position and David's/Nancy's/Steve's/NRO's. And that's good, because having daylight between your position and David French's is rarely a good idea.

As I tried to explain in my most recent post on the subject, I think Governor Romney should make a speech whose purpose is "to point out that the values [his] faith has given him are just like the values our faith has given us." And if you actually read President Kennedy's speech on Catholicism, a Romney talk would have to be an entirely different one. Honestly, I don't think President Kennedy's large-scale message was much different from Mayor Giuliani's comment that he's "not directed by" his Catholicism. That, clearly, is not the message Governor Romney wants to send about his faith. But I do think there is a values-based message that wavering evangelicals need to receive, that they haven't received it in massive numbers, and that Governor Romney should send it by seizing the megaphone that only he -- as opposed to EFM or any of his other backers -- has.
