JOHN THE BAPTIST?

Watch out, Gov. Huckabee. Sen. McCain could make a play for your voting bloc now. This weekend, the AP asked McCain how his Episcopal faith effects his campaign, and he had a surprising reply:

''It plays a role in my life. By the way, I'm not Episcopalian. I'm Baptist,'' McCain said. ''Do I advertise my faith? Do I talk about it all the time? No.''

This is fascinating since he's identified himself as an Episcopalian for years. In June, he said his wife and two of their kids had been baptized in the Arizona Baptist church, but he had not: ''I didn't find it necessary to do so for my spiritual needs."

What's changed? The AP points out that he's campaigning in Baptist-heavy South Carolina, trying to indicate he may be pandering. However, there are many good reasons to abandon the Episcopal Church whether or not you're trying to win Southern votes. It just seems like a good move to me--both politically and spiritually.
