JOHN EDWARDS
It's now being reported that (former) Senator Edwards has secured the support of Kate Michelman, the well-known pro-abortion activist who formerly headed NARAL. It seems to me to be of interest that Michelman did not go with Senator Clinton.
I must confess--which I am sure gives me away as something other than a political professional--a bit of shock that anyone would actually want such an endorsement. By that I mean: Edwards seems to want to establish himself here as "the" pro-abortion candidate. (Or, if you prefer, "the" pro-choice candidate.) Can you imagine waking up in the morning seeking that goal? It just blows my mind.
Aside: The one time I ever got excited about Michelman was when it was rumored that she was jumping into the Senate race in Pennsylvania, where my wife and I lived until earlier this year, as a "true-blue" pro-abortion alternative to then-Senator Rick Santorum and current Senator Bob Casey. Had she done so, she may very well have siphoned pro-abortion votes from Casey and assured Santorum, one of the bravest (if imperfect) senators in the 109th Congress, a third term. Alas.
