EVANGELICAL LEADER SUPPORTS LDS CANDIDATE
That's the headline in a Salt Lake Tribune article reporting what the president of the National Association of Evangelicals had to say about a Mormon Presidential candidate. (Hat tip: Kevin) Here's his quote:
"We rejected an Evangelical [Harriet Miers] for the Supreme Court and accepted a Catholic [Samuel Alito]," said Haggard, who was in Salt Lake City to address the Religion Newswriters Association's annual convention. "It's a question of competence."
It gets even better:
He said that Evangelicals and Catholics have long joined forces on these social issues and a similar dialogue about them between Evangelicals and Mormons is "in the early stages." "We are in search for areas where we can stand together," Haggard said.
The reporter even quotes from this website...although I think she used something Charles had written. So, while I go think of how to be more quotable and clever than Charles, take the time to read the entire article here.
UPDATE: Actually, I just noticed that the headline was replaced by a more subdued: Evangelical leader says "good government" is important in presidential candidate. The message is the same, though: the leader of the National Association of Evangelicals, which has 45,000 churches across America, said he could vote for a Mormon. This is really really good news, no matter what you call it.
