DON'T COUNT HAGGARD OUT YET, GOVERNOR
Although I'm certain Gov. Romney studies this site at least two or three times a day, my post about Ted Haggard a few weeks ago must've gotten by him -- at least, based on this portion of the Wolf Blitzer interview:
BLITZER: But I will read to you what Pastor Ted Haggard, the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, said the other day: "We evangelicals view Mormons as a Christian cult group. A cult group is a group that claims exclusive revelation. And, typically, it's hard to get out of these cult groups. And, so, Mormonism qualifies as that."Is that a problem, as far as evangelicals are concerned?
ROMNEY: Well, it doesn't sound like I am going to get his vote.
Actually, Governor Romney, don't count him out yet. Mr. Blitzer didn't convey the whole gist of Haggard's comments about the faith issue:
"We rejected an Evangelical [Harriet Miers] for the Supreme Court and accepted a Catholic [Samuel Alito]," said Haggard. "It's a question of competence."He said that Evangelicals and Catholics have long joined forces on these social issues and a similar dialogue about them between Evangelicals and Mormons is "in the early stages." "We are in search for areas where we can stand together," Haggard said.
In other words, I don't know if Mr. Haggard is sitting around his house, watching FoxNews, wearing one of these right now... But, I wouldn't be surprised. He even said he "would have no problem voting for a Mormon for U.S. president."
I wonder if Mr. Blitzer hasn't seen the entirety of Haggard's remarks, or if he was selectively choosing portions to make the Governor's faith more of an issue than it is?
