BREAKING NEWS: $2.5 MILLION
I just got a note from the floor of the Boston convention center. An e-mailer told me that Gov. Romney announced they already broke the all time record for a single-day political fundraiser: $2.5 million. And... that was an hour ago.
UPDATE: A reader writes:
I did a search and found that $33 million dollars is the ALL time record for one day fundraising set by Bush before the finance reform law. Since then I would argue that $6.5 million is probably the top record POST finance reform. You can thank McCain for imposing the caps.
MORE: An AP report says, "The figure dwarfed the $2 million estimated to have been raised by Sen. JohnMcCain, R-Ariz., and the $1 million raised by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also have created 2008 exploratory committees." So, it's at least a record for this season.
